Thai Stir Fried Vermicelli with Ground Beef, Pepper and Basil; Review of Thailand the Cookbook

August 15, 2014 By Laura 4 Comments

Thai Stir Fried Angel Hair Noodles with Ground Beef, (Chile or Bell) Peppers, Garlic and Basil

Thai Stir Fried Vermicelli with Ground Beef, Pepper and Basil is Thai style weeknight convenience food, and absolutely delicious. A copy of Thailand: The Cookbook was sent to me by the publishers for the purpose of an honest review. Affiliate links have been used to link to items discussed in this post. Apparently I have…

Sliced Tomato on Corn Flatbread with Bacon Basil Mayonnaise

You guys may be seeing more cookbook reviews around here. I decided I do so many of them for free and on my own dime, I might as well reach out to various publishers and see if they would send me review copies of the books I am interested in. And they did! This blogging…

Cucumber and Peach Salad with Mint Basil Vinaigrette: Alex Chops!

September 2, 2013 By Laura 14 Comments

Cucumbers and Peaches dressed in Basil Mint Vinaigrette

I wanted a really refreshing salad to go with Alex’s lasagna. I had seen this salad over at Poor Girl Eats Well and was instantly hooked. There is something about cucumbers in the summer that instantly perks any dish up. And I love using peaches in savory presentations.

Shrimp and Chicken Curry with Apples and Basil; Watermelon Sambhar

Preparing apples for curry

A lot of the furnishings in my home have been cobbled together from various hand me downs from family members. Recently, John and I decided that we needed a different approach to the girls’ bedrooms, so we made a trip to IKEA. While we were there, we also started thinking about my cookbook problem collection.

Tomato & Chickpea Salad with Basil and Yogurt Dressing

Skamp had the big Snip Snip done last week. I am not sure he cares much about his missing testicles, but he is definitely not thrilled by his cone of shame (shame because we tried to go without, but that dog would not stop licking!).

Lime Basil Bundt Cake

July 16, 2012 By Laura 23 Comments

That first day after getting home from the beach, I was craving cake. It sounds absurd, since this is hardly health food, but after a decadent week of Oreos (thanks, Dad), ice cream, peanut M&Ms (thanks, Dad again), and more ice cream, I wanted something simpler and less rich.

Shrimp & Scallops Tossed with Cherry Tomatoes, Basil & White Wine

I feel like the title of this post should be Why I Love Summer Part II: The Upscale Version. Because this was just as fast and pantry friendly as the last dish. It features summer’s best friends: zucchini and basil–and adds tomatoes, which only improves a dish. Now it just so happens that shrimp and…

Hi! I’m Laura and I am a recovering history major who has re-channeled all of my passion for learning about the history of different countries to learning about their food culture. That doesn’t mean every dish on here is strictly authentic, but it does mean that even my adaptations are not undertaken lightly. My goal is to show you–by doing–that these dishes are possible in your kitchen. Including desserts because I have quite the sweet tooth! Read More…
