Lynda of Lynda’s Recipe Box made a traditional Missouri summer dish, Green Beans & New Potatoes. Her mother, mother in law and all of their grandmothers make this dish in the summer–that is a serious family tradition! Misouri, USA

Tigerfish of Teszcape–An Escape To Food regularly makes Gojiberry Chicken Soup for herself and her husband. It has become a family tradition to ward off germs and boost their immune systems with this tasty soup. Sunnyvale, CA, USA

PatsyK of Family, Friends and Food submitted her mother in law’s Borscht, prepared by her husband, as usual. I think every husband should cook such a tasty dish regularly. Parsippany, NJ, USA

My Experiments With Food submitted this fabulously unique Lauki Ka Halwa (Dessert made from Bottle guord). Her family has been making this dessert since her childhood in India. India

Josie of 1 Kitchen, 2 Dogs and A Girl prepared MY Vietnamese Bun Salad, nearly bringing me to tears and making me quite happy. This was a forcible reminder of all of the traditions we create ourselves. Suburbia, OH, USA

Dhanggit of Dhanggit’s Kitchen made Beef Daube Provencale. The recipe was taught to her by her husband’s grandmother. I wish I could claim that–I think that is wonderful. Southern France

Ashwini of Konkani Foodie made Chocolate Rice Krispies, a dessert traditionally made by her mother in law (we had awesome in law turnout this month!). Check it out but try not to drool. USA

Minu of Chettinad Fiesta shares her Tomato Pachadi, a lentil dish that she has made so many times she no longer needs a recipe. It is a dish that has “won the hearts” of her family. Chennai, India

Nidhi of Charche Chauke Ke submitted her grandma’s Matariya Aloo (Spicy pea like potatoes). This is one of the strongest submissions we’ve had because this dish was made every single day for 30-40 years! Wow! And it looks so scrumptious–I am bookmarking it right now! Ann Arbor, MI, USA

My co-host HoneyB of The Life and Loves of Grumpy’s Honeybunch was finally able to make her treasured Mom’s Scrambled Tofu (it’s my understanding there may have been some grumbling from the meat and potatoes Grumpy). However, given her regular craving for tofu, it sounds like it is something he must put up with! And his loss because it looks wonderful! NY, USA

And last we have one of my mother in law’s favorites, Grandma Ellie’s Favorite Chocolate Loaf Cake. In the decades to come I know I will be telling my kids and hopefully grandkids about how much their (great) grandma loved this cake. SW Ohio, USA

Some great family recipes! Thanks Laura!

Yes…there was grumbling from Grumpy but it would be a shock if there weren't …. right? 😉

That's a fabulous round up Laura! Really shows how recipes and traditions are passed from one generation to the other. And that there were so many favorites from the in-laws, further strengthens the fact 🙂

I love family recipes- of course they are always the best. That chocolate loaf cake from Grandma Ellie looks like something I must try!

Hi! I’m Laura and I am a recovering history major who has re-channeled all of my passion for learning about the history of different countries to learning about their food culture. That doesn’t mean every dish on here is strictly authentic, but it does mean that even my adaptations are not undertaken lightly. My goal is to show you–by doing–that these dishes are possible in your kitchen. Including desserts because I have quite the sweet tooth! Read More…
