Voodoo Spiked Hot Chocolate: rum, coffee, chocolate and cream make for a delightful winter drink!

Spiked Voodoo Mocha

  • 2 cups half-and-half (or 1/2 cup cream plus 1 1/2 cups 2% milk)
  • 6 oz chopped semisweet chocolate
  • 2 cups strong coffee, decaf if desired, with chicory if desired
  • 1/2 cup vanilla rum
  • 1-2 T sugar, optional
  • whipped cream for serving
  • pinch of cayenne pepper for garnish optional
  • shaved chocolate for garnish optional


  1. Heat the half-and-half (or milk and cream) over medium low heat until it is starting to steam.
  2. Whisk in the chocolate and coffee. Whisk until the chocolate has melted.
  3. Turn the heat all the way down and whisk in the rum. Taste for additional sugar--I did not want it.
  4. Pour into 4 mugs. Top with whipped cream and the optional pinch of cayenne pepper (I liked the pepper but it is not necessary if you do not care for heat). Sprinkle some shaved chocolate curls over that if you want to be extra fancy--I cheated and used store-bought curls!
  5. Serve immediately.
